①１０ドル紙幣
Two boys were arguing when the teacher entered the room.
ある先生が教室に入った時２人の男の子達が言い争っていた。
The teacher says, “Why are you arguing?”
先生が「何をそんなに騒いでいるんだ？」と聞くと
One boy answers, “We found a ten dollor bill and decided to give it to whoever tells the biggest lie.”
一人の男の子がこう答えた。「１０ドル紙幣を拾ったから一番ひどい嘘をついた人にあげる事にしたんだ」
“You should be ashamed of yourselves,” said the teacher, “When I was your age I didn’t even know what a lie was.”
それを聞くやいなや、先生は「お前たちは恥を知るべきだ！先生がお前らぐらいの年の時は”嘘”というものの存在すら知らなかったぞ」と言い放った。
The boys gave the ten dollars to the teacher.
男の子達は１０ドル紙幣を先生に渡した。
※argue 「言い争う」 （発音：アーギュー rの音に注意）
※be ashamed of ～ 「～の事を恥じている」
ex) I’m ashamed of myself! 「我ながら恥ずかしい！」
②翌日の給食
“Dad, I don’t want to go to school today.” said the boy.
“お父さん、ぼく今日は学校に行きたくない”
“Why not, son?”
“どうして行きたくないんだ？息子よ”
“Well, one of the chickens on the school farm died last week and we had chicken soup for lunch the next day.”
“んーとね、先週学校で飼っていたニワトリが一匹死んだんだ。そして次の日の給食はチキンスープだった”
“Then three days ago one of the pigs died and we had roast pork the next day.”
“そんで３日前に豚が死んだんだけど、翌日の給食はローストポークだったんだ”
“But why don’t you want to go today?”
“ふむ、それで何で今日学校に行きたくないんだ？”
“Because our English teacher died yesterday!”
“だって昨日英語の先生が亡くなったんだもん！”
